A miracle through a child

The simple plea of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the world is “Believe Moroni.” Moroni taught us to observe—to open our eyes—and we will be shown that God is a God of miracles. He said: “But behold, I will show unto you a God of miracles, even the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and it is that same God who created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are” (Mormon 9:11).
Michelle, a co-worker of mine, shared a tender experience that she recognized as a miracle in her life. Michelle, a wonderful Christian, had quit smoking. She believed this was important to do as a faithful Christian, and she felt great about her decision. She had not smoked for two years. During a particularly stressful time, she slipped up and smoked a cigarette again. She felt both guilty and sad.
A big part of this guilt surrounded her being a Sunday school teacher for young children in her church. She felt like she did not even want to attend Sunday services. In her mind, she felt God didn’t love her anymore because of her sin. She told her religious leaders, and they reminded her how forgiving God is and suggested that she return to church.
She followed their advice and went back to church, although she was still embarrassed about what she had done. Burdened with these feelings of guilt and unworthiness, she taught her Sunday school class that day. After the class, she was helping a small child with a craft. Suddenly, without any background or insight into what was going on in her life, a young boy, about six years old, walked up to her and looked her in the eyes and said, “It is okay to make mistakes.” He then gave her a big hug and went back over to work on the project he was doing.
As she related her story, sweet Michelle wept and said, “I felt God talking to me through this little boy.” Alma reminds us of one specific way God reminds us he is speaking to us: “…little children do have words given unto them many times, which confound the wise and the learned” (Alma 32:23).
