Born of Gratitude

Many years ago, my four-year-old son, Blake, had a little electric quad motorcycle. He loved to play on it and drive it. It was his favorite thing to do for many months—until it broke. He was sad, but, in a short time, he moved on. After a few months, I decided to attempt to fix it.
I discovered it needed a new battery. I went and purchased one, replaced the old one and it was ready to ride again. The fix took some effort, but it was not very difficult. When I took young Blake outside to show him that his motorcycle worked again, he was overjoyed as he saw it move. He jumped on it and rode it again for the first time in months.
After just a moment, he suddenly stopped and got off the motorcycle. With a huge smile of delight, he ran over to me and threw his arms around me and gave me a deep hug of gratitude. Fixing the motorcycle had been beyond worth it. Seeing the joy on Blake’s face and his powerful hug of gratitude, Blake taught me something that day as I immediately realized that I, too, was grateful that the motorcycle was repaired.
His gratitude had softened my heart and brought me joy in return. Elder Gordon T. Watts said: “Joy and happiness are born of gratitude” (Gordon T. Watts, “Gratitude,” October 1998 General Conference). I saw happiness and joy—born of gratitude—in the eyes of my son that day.
