Do not doubt

We, too, can move toward having faith where “we do not doubt” when we pay attention to the numerous evidences and assurances God is sending our way. One such assurance was given to Ezra Thayer, who, at the time, was adamantly opposed to the interest his family was taking in Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. He even chastised his family members and demanded they not use his horses to go hear the sermons the Smiths were preaching.

In time, Ezra was persuaded by his brother to attend a meeting and hear Hyrum Smith preach. When he heard Hyrum preach the message of the Restoration, he said: “Every word touched me to the inmost soul. I thought every word was pointed to me. … The tears rolled down my cheeks, I was very proud and stubborn. There were many there who knew me. … I sat until I recovered myself before I dare look up.’

After the sermon, Hyrum showed Thayer a copy of the Book of Mormon. As he took and opened it, he was instantly filled with ‘exquisite joy.’ … When Martin Harris, who was standing by, affirmed that the book was true, Thayer replied ‘that he need not tell me that, for I knew that it is true as well as he’ (Matthew McBride and James Goldberg, “Ezra Thayer: From Skeptic to Believer,” Revelations in Context: The Stories behind the Sections of the Doctrine and Covenants, published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2016.)

Ezra Thayer knew the Book of Mormon was true without even so much as reading one word from it. Ezra became one who did not doubt as God had given him a very sacred profound and personal evidence.
