Do we sometimes try and change the Lords instructions?

Apr 29, 2018

I am fascinated by how we all approach life.

We have the plan of God, the Great and Merciful Plan, the Plan of Salvation, but in many instances, we want to change it.

There is a “Greater View” phrase in the Book of Mormon that I love.

The phrase is the instructions of the Lord.

One of the great blessings we have in the gospel of Jesus Christ is explicit instructions of the Lord.

We have the Bible, the New Testament, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, The Pearl of Great Price, The Strength of Youth pamphlet, The Prophet, and General Conference every six months.

All of these bring to us powerful “instructions of the Lord.”

There are no other people on the face of the earth with so much detailed instructions from God as the Latter-day Saints.

The problem with this is that we so often want to change the instructions of the Lord, or we want to modify or alter his direction, commands or exhortations.

I am reminded frequently that these instructions are the only way to true peace and happiness, yet we try and change them.

My wife and I have a dear friend currently who has been in and out of the church.

The only time in her life where she has found peace and contentment was the times when she was living the gospel and following the instructions of the Lord.

During those periods she was confident, determined and directed.

The last few years she has done all she can to argue, disagree, and contend with the Lord’s instructions.

She has been miserable.

She is filled with anger, frustration and unhappiness.

She has forgotten that the instructions were the fruit that is the most sweet, the most pure and the most delicious.

My prayer is that one day she will remember again the instructions and follow them precisely so she may feel more deeply the love of God and his precious blessings.
