I will never forget my son Tanner’s tender petition to the Lord at the age of nine. He reminded me of how his desires were ignited through the driver of desire that is fasting. We had a father-son interview one Sunday afternoon. I started with this question, “What did you fast about today?”

“I fasted for a sign to know that The Church was true,” he said.

“What happened?” I asked.

“During the sacrament when Boo (a young 16-year-old priest in our ward) was saying the prayer on the bread, I felt the Spirit.”

“What did it feel like?“ I asked.

“Well, I could feel a tear in my eye. He answered my prayer. This was the sign given to me.”

“How did it make you feel,” I asked?

He replied, “Glad!”

What a simple yet powerful petition by a nine- year-old. As a father, I cannot express my gratitude sufficiently for a tender merciful Father in Heaven rewarding the plea of one of my young children. His heart and his desires were changed through the principle of fasting.
