Sabbath blessings

President Hinckley shared these concerns about members of the Church many years ago in a regional conference priesthood session. He was concerned about “our tendency to take on the ways of the world.”

He said, “We don’t adopt them immediately, but we slowly take them on, unfortunately…I wish I had the power to convert this whole Church to the observance of the Sabbath. I know our people would be more richly blessed of the Lord if they would walk in faithfulness in the observance of the Sabbath.”4

For many of us the Sabbath Day represents a forgotten or unclaimed blessing. A commandment that could change our lives for the better is often left on the table. This is one of many commandments that—when obeyed— makes life much richer, much fuller, and increases our spiritual strength. Most importantly, the blessings of Sabbath day observance may have been forgotten by many, but they are not lost.

Blessings can be reclaimed beginning today by resolving to keep the Sabbath day holy. President Hinckley specifically referenced the Sabbath in his comments, but we can add so many other commandments filled with blessings such as tithing, ministering, temple attendance, missionary work, not gossiping, weekly service, quality parenting, disciplined fasting, earnest prayer, daily scripture study, increased honesty, arising early, attending our meetings, making better use of our time, and simply spreading more love.
