Thankful Hearts

religious spiritual Jul 06, 2021

I witnessed this happiness at another time when I was serving as a bishop. One Sunday, I received an unexpected visit to my home from a member of my ward, a good sister who had just received her patriarchal blessing. She had gone by herself, and it had been a remarkable feast for her.

She was filled to overflowing with the spirit, grateful to God for what she had experienced. She wanted to share it all with her husband, but he was not active at that time, and she felt he might not understand her joy. She had driven around for a time after the blessing, wondering who she could share her experience with and decided to come and talk to me, her bishop. As she bore her testimony and attempted to explain how she felt, she was filled with deep gratitude and joy for what had just occurred and for what the Lord had promised her.

God is so wonderful as he shares his blessings with his children. King Benjamin said: “And also that they might give thanks to the Lord their God … who had taught them to keep the commandments of God, that they might rejoice and be filled with love towards God and all men” (Mosiah 2:4).

Here, King Benjamin is wisely inferring that the hearts of those who are thankful are filled with the love of God and men. I have learned that when I am grateful for the goodness of God, my heart is softened and I am filled with more love of God and more love of others.
